Four Seasons in the Adirondacks: When to Visit

One of the best things about this corner of the Adirondacks is that it reinvents itself every few months. The Homestead is a four-season basecamp — here's what you can expect whenever you visit.

Spring: water and quiet trails

Snowmelt brings world-class whitewater to the Hudson Gorge and uncrowded trails everywhere else. Maple sugaring is in full swing, and late-season skiing can linger on the upper mountain.

Summer: lakes and long days

Kayak Minerva Lake, hike the High Peaks, raft the Hudson, or take the kids to Six Flags Great Escape. Long daylight means you can pack two adventures into one day and still catch a sunset.

Fall: the famous foliage

Adirondack autumn is the stuff of postcards. Ride the Gore gondola for a leaf-peeping view you won't forget, take a scenic drive, and end the day with the wood stove crackling.

Winter: snow on every side

Skiing is eight minutes away, with snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and fire-pit evenings filling the rest. The house was made for cold nights — warm, bright, and full of people.
